Uglies Discussion

I thought that this book was pretty interesting and very well thought out. One thing that always kept me reading was that the author didn't just come out and tell you everything right up front. I would find myself asking, "wait, where are their parents" or "why would the government really care what people looked like?", etc. but then I would read on and figure out the answer to my questions.

There were still some unanswered questions for me, though. I don't know if they will be answered in the last 3 books, but I still keep wondering why Tally didn't care to ever see her family ever again. I noticed when they visited her, they were pretty odd, but still, they ARE her parents. She didn't even really mention them much the rest of the book. And she talked so much about Peris at the beginning, but then after she met David, it's like he never existed. I think that she would have at least missed him a little! Also, I am still curious about David and Shay's relationship. Was there really a relationship, or was Shay just wishing there was? David never really even broke up with her if there was actually a relationship.

Other than that, I loved the book! It really made me think about self image and our society. What will our great, great grandchildren think about the way we live our lives?

I liked how Natalie asked some questions for discussion for her review, so I have found a few to pose to you. I'm excited to hear your answers to question #2. I did hope that Tally would get the operation and I kind of still think, "man, life would sure be easy if I got that operation!".

1. Have you ever had a friend like Peris, who abandoned your friendship after they moved away?
2. At first, did you hope Tally would get the operation? When did you change your mind? (Or did you?)
3. Have you ever found yourself trusting someone more or paying more attention to what they said not because they deserved it, but just because of their looks?
4. Would you give up your ability to think independently in exchange for being happy, beautiful, perpetually healthy, and rich?
5. If Shay could have gone back in time and never have met Tally, do you think she would?

Here are my answers!
1-Hmmmm, I can't think of a friend that totally abandoned me. A lot of the problem with keeping in touch is me! I have tried to be better lately.
2-I hoped that Tally would get the operation at first because she wanted it so badly. There really was no future (that we knew of at the beginning) without the operation. Once I found out that it would change her whole personality, I didn't want her to have it. The change in Shay was shocking!!! And seeing Tally's parents was also odd. They were not in touch with reality at all.
3-I think that looks definitely play a part in life. I really believe that people are drawn to attractive-looking people, whether they deserve the attention or not.
4-No. Although I would like to be rich and beautiful :), it's not worth it. Although, I think that Tally may end up keeping her beauty and finding a way to change her brain! (I have not read ahead, that's just a prediction).
5-Good question.... I don't think she would change things. I think that even though things haven't turned out great for her, she said she would have had the operation had she not met Tally. At least this way she had some adventures.

Fun questions, Jen! You're trying to make me think too hard though. :)

I really liked the book and look forward to reading the next ones. I started Pretties today, and I just finished So Yesterday (also by Westerfeld). So Yesterday was alright...I liked Uglies much more.

I can not fairly answer these questions because I read all 4 books. They give a lot of answers and changed some of my views. to question number three, yes, we are drawn to peoples looks. When I sold cars, I often made judgments about someone on their appearence. It was easier sometimes to communicate on the phone first. Lucky for us, we all have different ideas of beautiful.

Keep reading the trilogy, it gets much more in depth, though I did not like Specials as much as the others.

Natalie, I read so Yesterday too. I liked the idea of it but Uglies is way better. Midnighters is also good.

I love reading your answers to the questions! I agree that we are drawn to peoples looks. Whenever I start a new job or move, I always look around at people and wonder who I will be friends with, but that is all based on their looks.

Britney, I am glad that you said that the books get more in depth because this one left me with so many questions! I started Pretties last night and I like it so far!

I'm about halfway through Specials, and Britney just told me about Extras! Shay and Tally are just trying to get out of the Armory. I need to hurry up so I can get to Austenland!
